Most of Mariposa County is located in Plant Hardiness Zone 7.
There are many plants, vegetables and ornamentals, that do very
well here. A web search for plants that do well in our zone will
reward you with many plant suggestions!
It is certainly possible to garden year round in
Mariposa, provided you take some precautions in
winter. These may include covering plants overnight,
using "hoop houses" or possibly gardening in a hothouse, geenhouse
or other protected structure.

Tree Failure Advisory:
With the hot weather still upon us, it's time for a reminder warning about
Summer branch drop.
Summer branch drop is a widely-observed, poorly-understood phenomenon
where large horizontal or leaning limbs or stems suddenly break and fall. It
seems to occur more on hot, calm afternoons of late summer, and may be
associated with heavy foliage and/or heavy seed crops.
While we do not have a specific credible threat (lack of outwardly visible
defects), consider the "treeland security" threat level elevated to "yellow" while
hot weather continues. Recommendations on hot, still, late summer afternoons
include: do practice situational awareness; don't leave immobile people (infants,
elderly, etc.) directly under large oak trees; do run away if you hear a sharp
crack in an overhead oak tree; do report witnessed tree failures.
Residents and workers who are under oaks daily may have a higher exposure
to risk of tree failure than visitors. For additional information about tree hazards

THE JOY OF PLUMBAGO
When the summer heat starts to turn everything dull & drab, try this
creeper for ground cover or raised bed. Extraordinary deep blue flowers
bloom in great profusion from early July into September. Drought &
frost tolerant, shunned by both deer and gophers, it provides welcome
color to your garden. But be careful, it can be invasive.
P.S. Quail LOVE to nest in it. -Lucille

PROVEN SUCCESS PLANTS FOR SIERRA GARDENS:

Lilacs. (syringa) Deciduous shrub
One of the most prolific spring bloomers in the Sierra is the common lilac. Gardening books
describe it as a Zone 2 - 6 shrub but actual planting proves otherwise. It survives and
thrives through zones 8 & 9, at elevations from sea level to 2500 ft. Lilacs come in a
variety of colors from pale pink to deep magenta, and some of the hybrids white and yellow.
They require little care other than deep watering monthly during summer, light pruning
when dormant, and alkaline fertilizer(fresh wood ash from your stove is excellent). Generally
not attractive to gophers and deer.

Pomegranate (punica granatum) Deciduous shrub
A known hot dry climate shrub, these are abundant throughout California from sea level to
3000 ft. The shrub can reach a height of 20 ft but best kept pruned to 6 or 7 ft. They are
often used as hedges. Bright orange blossoms form fruit in the fall both equally decorative.
Deep water occasionally in summer and keep roots cool with garden mulch. Protect from
deer.
